EOS R7

Overall

The EOS R7 is a great camera for any photographer or videographer who wants to have a camera, that works for many different scenarios.
In no category the R7 is the best, but that was never the goal.

Image Quality

In bright daylight the 32MP APSC sensor produces perfect photos with great colour.
The quality of the images doesn’t suffer that much if you shoot below ISO4000. After that the noise starts to increase rapidly.

Lenses

Because I don’t own one of the RF Kit lenses, I can’t say anything about the Quality of those.
For my R7 I use the Canon Adapter or Viltrox Speed booster to adapt EF and EF-S glass.
Those work perfectly and are very cheap to buy on the used market.
Unfortunately since 2022, Canon is the only producer of RF glass and Canon L lenses are way to expensive for me.
So at the time I use my Tamron EF 16-300mm with the RF to EF adapter as an allrounder and my Canon 50mm f/1.8 in combination with the Viltrox RF to EF adapter. I am very lucky, that I got one of these Speed Boosters, because Canon has banned those of 3. Party suppliers and sells their own for about three times the cost.

Stabilization

Something new for the Canon APSC line-up is the camera internal stabilization (IBIS)
It works like a charm and really helps with both of my lenses, the stabilized Tamron and the not stabilized Canon prime.
One small downside of the IBIS is, that sometimes the background jiggles a bit when subjects while walking. But I rather have that than no IBIS.

Camera modes

For me this category is not interesting, because I only use the Manual mode of the Camera.
If you like shooting with shutter priority, creative filters, HDR, or other things, the R7 won’t let you down.

Video

I love the R7 for filming. If it is the 4K fine mode at up to 30FPS, the 4K/4K crop at 60fps or even Full HD 120FPS, the footage looks great. 4K fine is way more than just 4K, it looks so much better, thanks to the 7K oversampling.
Dynamic and colours are great for a camera, that is meant to shoot photos.
10bit clog3 is a must have and always turned on.
Even though it records in IPB or IPB light, the video looks perfect and if you have a decent PC you won’t struggle with editing.

Price

This one is the one of the main reasons for the R7.
Before buying it, I thought about buying the R6 or switching to Fujifilm.
The R6 was way too expensive for a Camera with 20MP and less features.
Fujifilm had nothing to offer at the same price, which would be as good as the R7.

AF

This one is great. The autofocus that’s built into the R7 is extremely fast and always on point.
It can detect human, animals, objects and brings them into focus before I could thing about it.
Unfortunately at 15FPS of RAW burst, some shots are not in focus, but because it’s 15FPS it’s not really a Problem for me.

Should you buy it?

If you search for a camera in that price range and you already have one or two Canon lenses at home, you should buy the R7.
If you are new to photography, I recommend you the M50 or R10 to start with.
And if money doesn’t matter to you, go ahead, and buy the R3.
